The Holy Redeemer Rebels senior basketball teams started their season on a high note, both earning victories over the St. Joseph Saints.

“It was a great way to start the season,” said the senior women’s head coach Laura Webb.

The women’s team cruised to a 64-20 win over the team travelling from Whitecourt.

The men’s team had a much tougher test for their opening game. The men earned a 68-53 win over the Saints in a tightly-contested affair.

With the wins came other good news for Holy Redeemer as they announced that they will host the 2017 2A Boys Provincial Basketball Championships from March 18-22.

The tournament will feature 12 teams from across the province and could bring upwards of 1,000 players, family and coaches to Edson.

The Rebels hope to put on a good show, and are looking for community support in the months leading up to the event.

“This is a tremendous honour,” said Athletics Director Peter Saik in a release. “No school in our zone has ever hosted a provincial basketball championship before, so we definitely want to put on a show.”

The four day event, March 18-22, will feature 11 zone champions from across the province, as well as the hometown Rebels, all competing for the top prize of provincial champion.
